Carteret, New Jersey UFO Sightings UPDATE

September 1, 2001
Carteret, New Jersey UFO Sightings
(Update to July 21, 2001 report)

The middle of July 2001 was a busy time for UFO Sightings in New Jersey. On July 21, 2001, Mystical Universe reported on the many sightings that were witnessed up and down the East Coast by literally hundreds of people, near the New Jersey Turnpike, as numerous bright lights lit up the sky. We were fortunate to receive several individual reports as well.

NIDS (The National Institute of Discovery Science) has now released their findings regarding the Carteret, New Jersey 'Sightings.'

NIDS requested that the Federal Aviation Association provide them with detailed information from the Newark, New Jersey Airport. This information included radar tapes and 'tower voice tapes' for the time period July 14-15, 2001. The basis for this request was the preliminary data received earlier, that indicated 'unidentified flying objects without transponders' were reported by the Newark Airport during this same time frame.

Why is the above so important? All commercial aircraft fly, equipped with transponders. This equipment is vital for the identification, detection and location of objects.

Mystical Universe is providing for your perusal, the Notice we received directly from them, word for word:

  • "Newark Airport Radar information:
  • Date:8/31/01 3:08:53 PM Eastern Daylight Time
  • From: National Institute for Discovery Science

On July 25, 2001, NIDS sent a FOIA request to the FAA requesting radar tapes (Tracon) for the July 14-15, 2001 timeframe around the Carteret UFO incident. NIDS also requested the tower voice tapes for the same time period from Newark International Airport. Prior to receiving the FOIA data, NIDS received a preliminary analytical report that details unidentified flying objects without transponders detected on air traffic control radar in the airspace around Newark International Airport on the night of July 14-15, 2001. The report is summarized in table form below. The following points are to be noted:

  • 1. All times in the report are Zulu time (GMT). Subtract 4 hours to get Carteret time for each data point.
  • 2. Speed of the different objects is measured in knots (kts).
  • 3. EWR refers to Newark International Airport.
  • 4. NONE of the objects in the table below had transponders.

By far the most noteworthy aspect of this communication is the large number of objects detected that DO NOT have transponders (all commercial aircraft have transponders) in the airspace around Newark International at the same time that an estimated seventy eyewitnesses on the New Jersey Turnpike and a further fifty (estimated) witnesses from Staten Island reported unidentified lights in the same area of sky.

A request to randomly check for aircraft without transponders at the same time on a DIFFERENT night produced the result that there were no objects without transponders in the air around Newark International airport on that second, randomly chosen, night. This "control" study lends support to the notion that such a large profusion of objects without transponders in the air around one of the busiest international airports in the world is unusual. Secondly, the fact that multiple objects without transponders were in the same airspace while over one hundred eyewitnesses on the ground were watching several unidentified objects over Carteret may be of interest. In addition, we now have interviews with 13 witnesses posted on our website."

Please note the comments regarding their 'control study' wherein they advise, in essence this is an 'unusual' situation and the additional fact that 'over one hundred eyewitnesses on the ground..... may be of interest.'

NIDS has posted Interviews with 13 of these witnesses on their website. We have included that LINK for you here, as well.

We encourage anyone who witnessed the lights over the New Jersey Turnpike in July, to fill out a sighting report on our site, and to also contact NIDS.

Those 'Unusual Lights' in the Sky

July 21, 2001

Since recorded time, people have been doing their best to understand Unidentified Objects that they witness in the Heavens above. Needless to say, thousands of years ago, there was no way of documenting what they saw by way of any video or even still photography.

Today, we are fortunate that we can indeed, if we have the equipment on hand, tape and voice record what our eyes fail to believe.

Mystical Universe originally set out to provide a forum for our Guests to let us know of any out of the ordinary 'sightings' they have witnessed. To date, we have amassed approximately 213 individual sightings from all over the Globe. This is by far not the largest database available by any means. However, we have noted quite a few Sightings that bear further discussion and they have to do with those 'Unusual Lights' that have again, made the news headlines just recently from the State of New Jersey.

When an individual or two spot an Unidentified Flying Object, several outcomes are possible. One, they may keep this information to themselves in fear of being ridiculed, not taken seriously. Two, they may get the courage to tell a close friend or relative, but don't always receive the support they need in attempting to explain just what it was they saw. As a result, they are likely to be countless 'Sightings' that have not been revealed to anyone.

When dozens or even hundreds of individuals spot an Unidentified Flying Object (s) the scenario takes on a distinct flavor. The odds of someone actually having a video camera or 35 mm camera increase, the Media gets wind of this and for a few days or weeks, the publicity is widespread and at times, it's as if there is a feeding frenzy. Witness are interviewed, videos are played and replayed, authorities are questioned. 'Believers' and 'Non Believers' come out of the woodwork. Theories are bantered about, comparisons are made and the outcome? Usually the public as a whole, has no more idea of the actual origin than they did at the time their world was shaken. Seeing a UFO with others testimony agreeing with yours, is a great relief to many people.

In March 1997, Phoenix, Arizona was to be changed forever. Some people reported seeing a 'huge Triangular shape craft' and later in that same evening, others reported seeing 'arcs of lights and orange orbs.' From that point in time until today, the "Phoenix Lights" have become world famous.

In January 2000, in Rockford, Illinois another series of events began to unfold. This time, many dozens of people attest to seeing 'Orange Orbs' overhead. On occasion, we still receive new reports of these 'strange lights over Rockford.'

That brings us to July 15, 2001, and the town of Carteret, New Jersey. At a little after midnight, hundreds of people driving around the area witnessed numerous bright lights, flying in a triangular pattern near the New Jersey Turnpike. Witnesses literally climbed out of their vehicles to stare and wonder what was unfolding in front of them.

All the major news services hopped on the bandwagon. Airports reported no known activity. NASA confirmed no known 'space debris' the FAA stated no known aircraft in the area at that specific time. Reliable witness after witness has been interviewed, and yet no conclusion has been reached.

The possibilities are endless. Weather related? 'Secret' Military Aircraft and if 'secret' why carried out over such a populus area? A 'hoax' devised to create havoc?

To really add some spice, we wanted you to be aware of the following. The National Institute for Discovery Science has been appointed to be the ONLY Official Organization to receive UFO Reports from The Federal Aviation Association. We have included a LINK to their web site, if you would like additional details. In addition, their site has an update on the New Jersey 'lights' as of July 19, 2001.

Do we have an answer? No. Do we continue to search for one? Yes!!
