"166 and counting... Is ET phoning home?"
During the past four years, SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence, has been collecting millions of "Work
Units" of data.
Out of those millions and millions, SETI has determined that they
have 166 "solid" signals that scream for additional
analysis.
In case you are unfamiliar with SETI, it involves approximately 4
million people in 226 countries searching the Heavens for credible
sources of potential signals from ET.
Individuals download criteria onto their Computers that is in
essence, a Screen Saver and it scans, far and wide. Each
"work unit" is then sent back to SETI located at The
University of California at Berkeley for in-depth analysis. The
data has been described as 'chunks of digitized noises' that just
may contain out of the ordinary radio signals from alien
civilizations.
With the help of the Arecibo Telescope in Puerto Rico where SETI
has it's receivers, the astronomers and scientists gathered to put
their heads together and spend 8 hours a day for several days to
concentrate on reviewing the TOP 166 signals. Arecibo is the
largest radio telescope in the world.
SETI has announced that 166 signals show great promise and that
has heads spinning! However, before you get ready to welcome ET,
be forewarned. "Dan Werthimer" the Chief Scientist for
the SETI@home project advises ET may not be found around the
corner. In fact he puts the odds of any of the 166 winners at only
1 percent success. He did follow-up his statement by stating,
"I don't expect to find ET next week," he said in an
interview prior to the trip. "But I am optimistic that
Earthlings will find ET in the next 100 years."
However?
Take heed. With all the confusion and conflict currently
enveloping this Earth, the news of possible success with ET is
good news, indeed.
If
you are interested in joining the quest for ET, the first LINK
below will take you to the SETI@home web page. Simply follow the
instructions for downloading the Screen Saver to your computer and
who knows? You could be THE one who finds ET!
